Remembering Richard “Rich” Hyland

Rich HylandRichard “Rich” Hyland, a member of Somerset 1, died on August 10th 2014 at age 72.

Richard worked for the US Post Office , retiring when he was 52. He owned his own handyman business named Hammer & Nail as well as many other part and full time work including Post Hardware and Madsen Kneppers & Associates both in Somerville. He also was a Special Police in Dunellen for 15 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Stoney Hill Church in Watchung. Richard also served honorably in the US Navy from 1960-1966.

Surviving is his wife Linda, 3 sons, Richard of Pittstown, Daniel and his wife Kristin also of Pittstown, Timothy and his wife Allison of Glen Gardner, 2 stepsons, Jeffery Stock of Bloomfield , Gregory Stock of Bridgewater, 6 grandchildren, Sean, Hanorah, Russell, Holden, Julian, and Emma.

Richard was a great man who was proud to be a Hibernian. Rich was our Division’s Mission & Charities Chairman, who took great pride in helping those who needed help. Richard was instrumental in raising funds for the Center of Great Expectations, which provides homeless pregnant women a safe place, presence, and path so that they may complete a healthy pregnancy, and choose the next step and follow through on their plan. Rich also helped out in our Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drives, which donates over 75 Turkey’s with Meals to needy families and charities in the area.
His work for our Division, his friendship,a nd his presence will be missed.
